Solid progress on the central reservation gap closures along the A1 as part of the Phase 1 safety improvement works, led by National Highways, who are responsible for the A1. Here’s where things currently stand—and what’s coming next.
✅ 11 Gaps Confirmed for Closure
While National Highways initially aimed to close 16 central reservation gaps during Phase 1, several Public Rights of Way (PROW) issues have meant they are proceeding with 11 closures for now. This ensures they can hit their tight delivery window and align the closures with the Vehicle Restraint System (VRS) renewal works, which are due to start next month.
The following gaps have had legal orders published and are going ahead:
- Gaps 20, 22, 23, 29, 30, 32, 33, 34, 36, 46, and 47
➕ 5 More Gaps Approved for Closure
In positive news, following discussions between National Highways and Lincolnshire County Council, we’ve received the green light to proceed with an additional 5 gap closures—without affecting any PROWs.
These are:
- Gaps 11, 12 & 13 (near Foston)
- Gaps 41 & 44 (also shown in the location plan)
National Highways is now working quickly to draft and publish orders for gaps 41 and 44, with the aim of closing them as part of the current VRS works programme.
